Mountain West Conference Coverage on SportzNutz

 NCAA Quick Hits

SportzNutz 2006 Mountain West Football Preview

Interestingly enough, TCU and Utah each received five 1st place votes and tied on total points. The MWC also saw a wide disparity of opinion in the rest of the league. Colorado State was picked for 4th place, four times and also in 8th place twice, including the “The Edge”. New Mexico was another squad not everyone could agree on, chosen as high as 4th and dead last in another. The power appears at the top of the conference with anyone’s guess what will happen to fill the rest of the positions. This could be very good road underdog league.

What are Butch Davis's plans for 2009?

Amid rumors that the University of Tennessee is about to swoop in and sign Tarheels coach Butch Davis to a long-term deal, came this interesting non-denial from the Butchster himself.

"The long and short of it is, the administration and I are completely and firmly committed to building a championship football program at North Carolina," he told reporters a week ago. "My family and I are very happy in Chapel Hill."

Just my two cents: You can go ahead and add the words "today" and "for now" to the end of each sentence.

Davis's comments haven't gone unnoticed in ACC country, either.

J.P. Giglio from the News & Observer says Davis's future is "brighter than Tennessee" and runs down the ...

TCU - UVa agree to home-and-home

Get ready, Virginia fans: That mighty BCS contender from Texas is coming to Scott Field in 2009.

TCU had been on my mind after learning earlier in the day that the Horned Frogs will be coming to Virginia in 2009.

The contracts will be signed shortly, but agreement has been reached.

I'm not sure about the origin of the TCU-UVa talks, but the Cavaliers would not visit TCU, located in Fort Worth, until 2011 at the earliest and probably not till 2012. The Cavaliers already have lengthy trip planned to Southern California for 2010.

TCU and Virginia last hooked up in the 1994 Independence Bowl - a 20-10 win for the Cavs.

Thursday Night Blackout in Utah
When Jim Boylen became the Utah basketball coach last year, he vowed to get rid of black in the Utes' uniforms and get back to the traditional red and white.

The football team, however, is going the opposite direction, at least for a night, putting black into its uniforms in a big way for Thursday night's "blackout" game against TCU.

According to the Deseret News Utah plans to join the trend of teams exploring the marketing gimmick that is the black uniform.

I have been threatened to be banned if links to Utah's history of black gymnastics uniforms are included in posts (granted no warning of such content was given, just a note of the history of black uniforms.) I am half hoping Utah took this opportunity, complete with gold lettering. I am also clearly on the side of Utah fans that HATE the idea, but I am a Utah man, ...

A BCS Nightmare
With all the BCS scenarios out their this one is truly frightening.

Suppose:
1) Oregon State wins their remaining games
2) USC Losses a game
3) TCU defeats Utah
4) Boise State goes undefeated

Then Oregon State wins the PAC 10.
A reasonable excerpt from the final BCS standings would be:
#7) Bosie State
#8) TCU
#10) Ohio State
#11) USC
#13) Utah
#14) Tulsa/Ball State
#20) Oregon State

The SEC champion and #2, Big 12 champion and #2, Penn State, ACC Champion and Oregon State would fill the NC game, Rose Bowl and the three host slots for the other three BCS bowls.

Boise State, the Big East champion and one of: TCU, Ohio State, USC, Utah and Tulsa/Ball State would fill the remaining spots.

The Fiesta Bowl gets first pick, and would take USC, unless their successful history with Boise State and ...
